As someone who is facing this long term situation, I'm glad you posted this since, like most Americans, I had no idea this was included in the new health care plan.

My husband had major surgery last week and is still in ICU heavily sedated with a respirator. WE have no idea how long he will remain thus, but then after an extended hospital stay, he'll be going to a rehab center for you knows how long. Before his surgery, I was taking care of him and like the lawyer in the article, he was already unable to get around by himself even with the aid of a walker, had fallen several times, and was unable to do anything for himself. I don't mind telling you, that taking care of a loved one is tiring, exhausting, and sad. I've promised him that I would take care of him as long as it takes, but at this point, I'm giving out. The sad part is that he was so active until the past 6 months or so and then just began to go downhill in a hurry. It may be to late for us to purchase the insurance, but you can be sure I'll be checking with our insurance agent on Monday to find out what, if anything, he knows about it.

Please keep Dennis is your thoughts/prayers. He's got a long way to go and I really don't want to face life without him.

I'll keep both you and Dennis in my thoughts. Hope he's up and around and feeling better in no time (take extra good care of yourself too!!)

Gail, I did not realize Dennis was that sick. I am so sorry! I'll definitely keep you both in my prayers, and meanwhile, post here often and let us give you some support.

And take care of yourself as best you can.

Thank all of you for your kind thoughts. Today, Dennis is no worse (which they tell me is a good thing), so we're taking it one day at a time. Hopefully I'll get to see at least one of his doctors tomorrow and can find out something more in detail. Since his problem was a portion of his bowel that lost circulation and died, infection from the bacteria released is one of the major things the doctors are watching for. So far, so good-no fever.

I'll be honest with ya'll. I'm exhausted. Sitting in the ICU waiting room waiting for my 30 minutes with him is mind and butt numbing. I try to be at home at least by 6 every day, but I have to leave the house at 7:30AM to be on hand for the first visiting time of the day and since Dennis retired, I'm out of practice in getting up early. At least I am sleeping somewhat better; the first couple of nights were sleepless and at my age, I don't bounce back from late nights like I used to :).

Will keep you updated if you'll help us with your good thoughts and prayers.
