Dinner with Bert, Verbie, Jilly & her hubby

Well, I'm going to be the first to get in a new post about dinner tonight. It was a lot of fun, I swear, poor Bert & Jilly's guy could barely get a word in edgewise! We talked and laughed and ate really good Mexican food, yum. The only bad part of the evening was that Verbie is a bully and payed for all of our dinners! :) Thanks for a lovely evening everyone, it was definitely worth the drive!

Meeting w/Jilly

Hey all, I am trying to find out when we are supposed to meet up with Jilly. I am available for dinner tomorrow (Monday) night if that works for others.

Who knew Condi was a drinker

(CNN) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that despite President Bush's low approval ratings, people will soon "start to thank this president for what he's done."
So we can sit here and talk about the long record, but what I would say to you is that this president has faced tougher circumstances than perhaps at any time since the end of World War II, and he has delivered policies that are going to stand the test of time," Rice said in an interview that aired on CBS' "Sunday Morning."
The secretary of state brushed off reports that suggest the United States' image is suffering abroad. She praised the administration's ability to change the conversation in the Middle East.
"This isn't a popularity contest. I'm sorry, it isn't. What the administration is responsible to do is to make good choices about Americans' interests and values in the long run -- not for today's headlines, but for history's judgment," she said.
"And I am quite certain that when the final chapters are written and it's clear that Saddam Hussein's Iraq is gone in favor of an Iraq that is favorable to the future of the Middle East; when the history is written of a U.S.-China relationship that is better than it's ever been; an India relationship that is deeper and better than it's ever been; a relationship with Brazil and other countries of the left of Latin America, better than it's ever been ...
"When one looks at what we've been able to do in terms of changing the conversation in the Middle East about democracy and values, this administration will be judged well, and I'll wait for history's judgment and not today's headlines."

Trip

Last night, after 19 hours of travel I got to the Hilton in Anaheim. In a bit I will call Bert to amass the CA shelfers and then pass out. I hope you all had a great Christmas holiday and have wonderful New Year's celebrations. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get back on the Internet, so don't be shocked if this is it from me for a few days.

Love,
Jilly

idiot

so i was reading the shelf site and i got annoyed, as usual, but this time i said something. i made the mistake of pointing out that someone was a hypocrite and then one of the crazies said something back and now i've responded to that. you'd think that i would have learned to tune out the crazies, but every so often, i have a bain fart and hit "reply." I also feel that both of my posts made good points, as if that matters. maybe i just need to stop going there in the new year?

What freaking thing have you seen today?

I went grocery shopping today.
1. On the way to Meijer I saw a man on his riding lawn mower cutting grass despite the fact that a) it's December and b) there's a dusting of snow on the ground.
2. In Meijer I saw a man (different man) open the Doggie treat bin (where you can buy dog treats in bulk), take out a dog biscuit and pop it into his mouth.

Have you noticed freaky things today?

If you haven't already done it

DON'T MISS Lori's TV appearance!  (Click her link to the right)  Lori, you are a natural in front of the camera!  You were calm, articulate, self-assured and seemed totally relaxed in front of the camera.  Your house looked great, too.  I am just very, very impressed.

(But I don't think your cat is quite ready to become a star....)

Thanks

I don't get many thanks, and I'm okay with that. I get a lot of whining, cussing, shouting, moaning and general complaining, but I don't get a lot of "thank yous." Yesterday a student gave me a hand-made thank you card, and it made my week. It was a folded sheet of notebook paper with a badly spelled sentiment giving thanks for tutoring a student after school. He said something about being grateful for me giving him time over my baby. It was one of the sweetest things anyone has ever made for me.

Ok, don't laugh but...

I am trying to find the Today sponge or another contraceptive like this and I swear, I can't find it anywhere around here or online. I can't use hormonal birth control anymore and I'd like to have an option other than condoms, so if you know of a place either online or otherwise that sells them, please let me know. Thanks gals! (and Ded) :)

Gov Blago

While watching a news story on Illinois Gov. Blago_____ this blurb scrolled across the bottom of the station "Gov. Blago_____ has a 4% approval rating."

Who are these four percent?? Luddites who don't watch TV or read the news??

In other news: It was news when Obama took his two girls to pick out a Christmas tree.

A Christmas Debate

Who is your favorite movie Scrooge? I have been having a raging war with the 8th grade English teacher who feels that George C. Scott is the definitive Scrooge, while I feel that Alastair Sim is the one and only. One person at school has weighed in with Patrick Stewart, but both John and I feel that his is a second rate classic although the production is good.

I also really love Lionel Barrymore's radio interpretation of A Christmas Carol too
and as a side note Bill Murray was pretty good in Scrooged too.

What would you do?

So this morning I'm on my way to work, driving up Tujunga Cyn Blvd, which is a little windy and people drive pretty fast on it. After one curve there's a spot where some people have to completely stop to make a left turn into a convalescent home parking lot. The street is only one lane each way so that stops all traffic going that direction until it's clear. I saw that a truck was stopping there and figured they were turning so I started slowing down also. The car right behind the truck also slowed down. The car behind them (and right in front of me) did not and rear ended the woman in the 2nd car. I stopped in time so it was just the two of them I think. So the woman who was hit pulls to the right to get out of the way and the car that hit her pulls around her to pull over also, right? Wrong! He fricken' takes off! And I'm like, no way, that's BS, so what do I do, I go after him. But he obviously knew I was following him because he is zooming along, I have to go thru a yellow light and then he goes into a residential area and I ended up losing him. Totally sucks :( I wasn't trying to get him to stop, I just wanted to get his lic plate number but I never got close enough. When I went back the woman was gone also, so I guess it's a moot point, but still, my question is, what would you have done in that situation?

CK

Do you think Caroline Kennedy should be appointed to fill Hilly's seat, should Hilly be appointed Secretary of State? She's a good writer and do-gooder, but I'm on the fence as to her political ambitions.

goodbye

Tonight I had to take my dog for euthenasia. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Brandi was the best dog I'll ever have. She spent 12 years as a seeing eye dog, and then 5 years in retirement with me. 17 is a long life for a lab and I hope I made her last 5 years happy for her. The vet and vet tech who assisted us were wonderful and made the process easier. It feels odd to be sitting here typing and not have her at my feet snoring.

ThereFlu is a Miracle Drug

While hopped out on theraflu i've written 2 papers, made 2 of the best power point presentations known to man (one on my trip to the AVAM in Baltimore and the other on how European Welfare States effect women's rights) and made an annotated bibliograpgy for the feminist paper (it was extra, i didn't have to do it, now they tell me). I also did 3 assignments for the feminist class while being nice to the raging pack of barbies. Now i only need to finish weaving for the feminists and take a final for the sped class and give my 2 presentations and i can nap. Oh and in between, i've been watching a sick baby, wroking full time, cleaning my house, helping cook for 20 people and making plans to have my dog put to sleep. I really think i'd be dead if it weren't for the apple cinnamon flavored theraflu and aloe kleenex.

what's your miracle drug?

btw i want to look as good as alice walker does when i'm her age. she read "ain't i a woman" and you should go find it on youtube and marvel at her beautiful skin like i did.

off to crash
jilly

She's b-a-a-a-c-k

The pit bull with glasses that is.  Yep, Sara Palin is right here in my state today, stumping for the Republican in the run-off for the Senate seat that will determine whether or not the Democrats will have a filibuster proof majority.

According to the "perceived wisdom", if the Republican wins, Sara will be with us for a long time since it will prove that she's the reason he won-never mind that we've been undated with nasty campaign ads, not to mention visits from Rommney, Rudy, Cheney and Huckabee.  For a real "what the hell?" moment, look up his last race against Max Cleland-a triple amputee from Vietnam who Chambliss (the R. in this race) portrayed as "soft on terrorism" and unpatriotic to boot.  And the people of my state fell for it!

Keep your fingers crossed that there is a large turnout tomorrow.

It's Hilly's Day!

Secretary of State. How exciting! She'll do a fantastic job!
