This morning was the day educators everywhere worship at the alter that is staples and go back-to-school shopping because it's educator's day. My guy and I have been saving our $20 gift cards and coupons that they send us every so often, so off we went at 9:30am (you have to get there early after all). We got oodles of craptastic stuff. I didn't need pens or pencils as my resolution to not give out my stuff to the kids at school went well and I still have several boxes. Does anyone still remember how to cover books with a paper bag?

Hallie and I went school supply shopping week before last. (Yes, she's a college grad with a fulltime job now.) She was gazing sadly at the Target newspaper ad and remarked "I miss school supplies." So we went to Target and bought a package of 50 crayola markers, some water colors, a 64 count box of crayons and an oversized coloring book. She felt much better.
there is nothing like the smell of a fresh box of crayons.
Hey did you notice that school supplies weren't super cheap this year---I guess the gas and transportation hit that cost too
I seriously wanted to murder all my kids' teachers who insisted on that paperbag cover thing. It never stayed on, ripped, and the girls rightfully saw through my mediocre mothering skills every time I tried to help them complete the task.
They used to pass out free book covers to us the first week of school, when I was a little girl in Fort Worth. They had ads all over them from local stores, but they were marked with how to cut and fold the corners and a little bit of stick'em on the edges to make them stay. Some night the first week of school, my dad would put them on all our books. Ah... memories.
i think the cloth book covers with the elastic band are pretty neat.
our school gives out free book covers but they come in the 4th week, and all of the stupid "cover your book" assignments are in week 1-2.
Last year I covered their books for them with posters and they "ooohed" and "ahhhed" my skills. I was thinking of getting paper bags at A&P on sunday just in case and looking up how to cover books.
Most of my kids lack decent parents, so we end up filling in. I asked for book covers at staples, but they wanted $4 for book socks instead of 2 cents for a cover. I remember my mom buying the 20 cent covers and covering our books while cussing to herself.
Your girls were very lucky they had you to help them Tree. I hate the supply lists with all of the crazy things on them that the kids don't really need. A lot of my kids get free school supplies for being poor, if their parents bothered to request them.
My principal is silly enough to think that becasue the number of FARM (poor) students is reduced from the middle school to the high school, that the kid's families got richer magically in that summer between 8th grade and 9th grade making them less need itnesive.
I think that many of the parents just gave up after 8th grade and quit filling out the public assistance forms.
what's a book sock Jilly?
Maddie always covered her books painstakingly in paper bags then equally painstakingly illustrated each one (Usually with a misspelled word or two) with the subject of the book and pictures representing what the text contained... The science ones were always the coolest.
I used to have to hound her to get it done, but she always was picky about them.
In the next couple of days when I have more time, I'll take pictures of the step-by-step process of covering a book using a paper bag. I still remember how, and my covers would last all year long.
We covered ours in wallpaper.
so did we my maths book was always well flocked
You had flocked? You were dead posh!
Our front hall looked like an indian restaurant
a book sock is a fabric cover (like a sock) that you just put over the cover of the book. they cost about $4 each and do not last all year. I never thought of using wallpaper, we never had any of that around so that's probbly why.
