Signs of the times

I saw my first Christmas decorations today at a house just up the road from us.

My question is...isn't it a tad to early to put out all that crap?  We barely get our tree up before Christmas Eve and there's no way I'm looking at it from now 'til Christmas.

When do y'all put up the decorations and how quick after Christmas Day do you take them down?

Good lord, can't we enjoy the fall first? We usually put the tree up the first or second weekend in December, and even then it seems too long. Gail, I finished Edgar Sawtelle. I'd give it 3.5 out of five. Have you ever heard of Good Reads? It's a place to keep track of your books and see what your friends are reading. I like it. If you're signed up, let me know so I can friend you. Same for Facebook.

I put the tree up the day after Thanksgiving. This sort of new for me, since I've been using an artificial tree. In this dry climate, you'd burn the house down for sure if you put a real one up more than a week before Christmas.

(The reason mine goes up so early is because it's likely to be the only day all season that Dave will for sure be home. My tree is a 9 1/2' prelit fake one, and it is WAY too heavy for me to handle alone.)

When I was a kid, we put ours up a week before Christmas. We thought it was terrible, and wanted it up much earlier, but in retrospect, it was nice that way. It still had that wonderful smell on Christmas Day.

I usually take it all down the day after New Years Day. I like the decorations, and after spending all that time putting them up, I like to have them around for a while. I love Christmas!

I don't really have any decorations, just a 2-ft white tree that I pull down from the closet, fully decorated, and set on the bar.

If I ever buy a house, then I'll have me some gooood decorations!

Tree, I'm glad you liked Edgar Sawtelle-unfortunately, I'd give it a 2 out of 5. But, hey, that's what makes the world go around and I'm sure we'd have books in common that we both love.

I neglected to mention that our tree lives in a box in the attic-prelighted and decorated-that we got from Gump's about 10 years ago. IF we put it up and that's a big if, it'll come down Dec. 26. Dennis favorite Christmas saying is "Bah humbug" and I think it's rubbing off on me. Plus Heather doesn't always get to come home for Christmas and with no little kids, we just old grumps ;-)

I'll look for Good Reads and if I sign up, I'll let you know.

We put up a live Fraser fir about ten days before Christmas, decorate it a day or two after or whenever the kids get home. But the fireplace mantel, banisters and front door railings are dressed in white pine roping at least a week before. Any holiday cards we receive, and we don't get that many, are taped along the kitchen door frame. Pink and red poinsettias are set to either side of the fireplace. And then all of it is taken down at the end of the first week of January.

if i bother with it all, mine goes up a week or so before christmas and comes down a week or so after. i mainly wait to feel in the mood for both events to occur. we usually get a real tree and my guy sets it up, puts the litghts on and waters it as needed. last year we put only the lights on the tree. this year we might not get one b/c we're leacing town on the 26th, and the baby will be hard to keep away from the tree. when i was a kid, putting up the tree was the worst chore and i loved it when my mom did it herself.

Gail, I've already invited half the people here to come live us. No takers. If anyone comes for Xmas, they have to remain at least a month.

I put my decorations up usually Thanksgiving weekend, or the weekend after. I'm always anxious to put them up...but, then I'm equally anxious to take them down. SO, I usually do it sometime around New Year's Day...

Ded,
I would gladly take you up on your invitation, but you'd have to swear that you wouldn't tell a sole where I was!

growing up , we put the tree up the day after Thanksgiving and always seemed to take it down on my freaking birthday--the 27th . . which really sucked IMO.

I haven't yet decided if I'll even put one up

I have posted on another occassion I am sure about our adventures with live trees and why we won't do that again,,, ever. My husband is the fellow who puts up the decorations and I usually hang out in the pig room pretending to be busy. I do my spousal duty by helping him take it down. We have the same decorations year after year, a nativity, wooden reindeer,, the santa candle my daughter scratched the eyes out of when she was about four,, she didn't want santa watching her.
