Something has died in my chimney. I am afraid to open up the flue and find out what it is. We did have chimney swifts nesting in there but I haven't heard them for a few days- they make quite a lot of squeeks and chirps, and if it doesn't creep you out (which it doesn't me) it is sort of homey to listen to. I have a candle burning on the hearth; hope that helps with the odor and you know that I have company coming this weekend of course.

When we lived in Illinois, we had some sort of critter die inside of our walls. The smell of decay was pretty strong for about six weeks! Hope your critter decomposes faster than that one did.
maybe it is a squirrel!
depend on it, it's a Republican critter that didn't have the grace to die somewhere unobtrusive.
be sure that it isn't meat someone left in a grocery bag forgotten somewhere. I had a funky smell two weeks ago that got so bad i puked when in the kitchen. My guy left chicken in a shopping bag and forgot to put it away. the bag fell into the high chair and it took me forever to find.
Jilly, that reminds me of the time I house/cat watched for my neighbors. On about day three, I started smelling something really dreadful. It kept getting worse and worse as the days went by. I even went into the crawl space looking for rabbit or something. Turned out to be broccoli that they had left in the microwave- bad.
my sister in law left cauliflower in a cooler once, in her car trunk. it ate right through the plastic and smelled worse than a dead animal.
let's all tell stinky stories!

And then there's BP about an hour after he's eaten Mexican food . . .

We once had something die in the wall at a firm where I worked and they wouldn't do anything about the smell and then the wall started bleeding and they came out and found a HUGE rat dead in the wall.
Last weekend I was at my storage unit and there was a dead baby bird laying right by the door. Freaked me out. The dog was going for it and I had to grab him. UGH.
